Title:Seattle Eight
Date:1970
Description:

Alternative title: The Seattle 8 Needs Your Support Announces: “Rally in front of the federal courthouse,” in Tacoma, November 16. Picket starting at 8:30 AM, rally in support of defendants at 12:00 and 4:00 PM. Calls for: “Come to the trial at least one day a week. Tell your friends and have them come.” Quote from document: “Traditionally, the Northwest has been used as a test ground for repression. In 1919 before the Palmer Raids and in 1950 before McCarthy hit, Seattle had its own versions. And now, in 1970, the federal government is trying again with the Seattle Conspiracy trial. Those seven young people in that Tacoma courtroom are fighting against our common enemy -- a corrupt system that exploits and wastes our lives while waging war upon the people of other countries, as well as the black and brown people of this country, so that a few may profit -- at all our expense.” Background information: "On April 16 [1970], the federal government, in its infinite wisdom, beatified eight more Movement leaders when Mike Abeles, Jeff Dowd, Michael Justesen, Joe Kelly, Michael Lerner, Roger Lippman, Charles Clark 'Chip' Marshall III, and Susan Stern were charged with conspiracy to incite a riot at the February 17 'TDA' demonstration ... Justesen disappeared underground, so the 'Seattle Eight' became the more mellifluous 'Seattle Seven.'" (Crowley, Walt. Rites of Passage: A Memoir of the Sixties in Seattle. Seattle: University of Washington Press. pp. 171-172)
