From the Zeman (Zoya) Freedom Summer Collection. This six-page document is a publication of the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) regarding the cotton vote in Mississippi. It summarizes the attempts of African-American farmers to run for the office of committeeman of the local ASC seat. The Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASC), is part of the Department of Agriculture, which is responsible for the regulation of cotton farming. The document also describes hate crimes against African-American farmers who attempt to vote or run for office.
