From the Randall (Herbert) Freedom Summer Photographs. Victoria Jackson Gray, local civil rights leader and candidate for the U.S. Senate on the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) ticket, at Vernon Dahmer's fish fry for the volunteers on his property in the Kelly Settlement, to the north of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on July 4, 1964. The gathering marked the official beginning of Freedom Summer in Hattiesburg.
