From the Randall (Herbert) Freedom Summer Photographs. Local African-American residents sing at the fish fry given for the volunteers by local civil rights leader Vernon Dahmer on his property in the Kelly Settlement, to the north of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on July 4, 1964. In the left foreground is local African-American resident Ulysses Everett. On his left is local African-American teenager Sandra Blalock. The gathering marked the official beginning of Freedom Summer in Hattiesburg.
