Title:Singing at Dahmer fish fry (1)
Date:1964 July 4

From the Randall (Herbert) Freedom Summer Photographs. Volunteers and local people sing at Vernon Dahmer's fish fry for the other guests on his property in the Kelly Settlement, to the north of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on July 4, 1964. A female volunteer strums a guitar and sings in the center as Mr. Dahmer's nieces Lana (left) and Lorna (right) Beard sing behind her. The gathering marked the official beginning of Freedom Summer in Hattiesburg.

Electronic version made available through a National Leadership Grant for Libraries from the Institute for Museum and Library Services.
