From the Randall (Herbert) Freedom Summer Photographs. This black-and-white photograph shows Freedom Summer volunteers gathered outside a brick building with SNCC Field Secretary Cordell Hull Reagon (third from right, wearing a hat) for instruction in nonviolent self-defense. The instruction took place at the second SNCC Orientation Session held at Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio, between June 22 and 27, 1964. In the center left of the picture wearing a sleeveless dress stands Mississippi civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer.
