From the Spears (Lawrence D.) Civil Rights Collection. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) teletype from the New Orleans office to the Director dated July 24, 1964. States that the case involving the attack on Lawrence Spears, David Owen, and Rabbi Arthur Lelyveld will be presented to a local, not federal, grand jury. The three civil rights workers were attacked by two men from Collins, Mississippi, and beaten with iron pipes as they were returning from voter registration canvassing during Freedom Summer.
