From the Spears (Lawrence D.) Civil Rights Collection. Memo from Alex(?) Rosen to Alan(?) Belmont dated July 21, 1964, regarding the attack of Lawrence Spears, David Owen, and Rabbi Arthur Lelyveld in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on July 10, 1964. The three civil rights workers were attacked by two men from Collins, Mississippi, and beaten with iron pipes as they were returning from voter registration canvassing during Freedom Summer. The memo discusses the progress of the investigation. One suspect, Kilmer Estus Keys, is in custody, and authorities are still looking for another suspect, Clifton Archie Keys. Portions of the document are blacked out.
