From the Spears (Lawrence D.) Civil Rights Collection. Memo from Alex(?) Rosen to Alan(?) Belmont dated July 17, 1964, regarding the attack of Lawrence Spears, David Owen, and Rabbi Arthur Lelyveld in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on July 10, 1964. The three civil rights workers were attacked by two men from Collins, Mississippi, and beaten with iron pipes as they were returning from voter registration canvassing during Freedom Summer. The memo includes the names of two suspects, one being Kilmer Estus Keys, and also mentions that Spears' father was an FBI agent during the 1940s. Portions of the document are blacked-out.
