Photograph of a public meeting attended by U.S. Representative Helen Gahagan Douglas, held on Oct. 17, 1946 at the Second Baptist Church, 2412 Griffith Ave., a prominent African-American congregation in Los Angeles. The meeting could be a campaign rally in support of Douglas' re-election to a second term. Douglas sits behind the podium, wearing a broad brimmed black hat and black dress. Douglas' husband, actor Melvyn Douglas, is delivering a speech at the podium. Charlotta Bass, publisher of the California Eagle, is seated second from right. Douglas, a Democrat and supporter of the New Deal, served three terms in the House of Representatives from 1945 until 1950.
