Title:Charlotta Bass attends a banquet for the Citizens Committee to Preserve American Freedoms, Los Angeles, 1954
Date:1954 Feb.
Description:

Photograph of Charlotta Bass, left, and other guests at a banquet for the Citizens Committee to Preserve American Freedoms (CCPAF), February 1954. Harvey O'Connor sits next to Bass, holding his glasses; a veteran socialist and labor news reporter, O'Connor was the keynote speaker at the banquet. Frank Wilkinson, one of the CCPAF's founders, has his arm on O'Connor's shoulder and is talking to him. Rev. Stephen Fritchman of the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles is seated third from left; his wife, Frances, sits next to him, holding up her hands as she speaks to Madeleine Borough, the woman sitting next to her. Madeline's husband, Reuben Borough, is standing behind the people seated at the table. CCPAF was established in 1952 to oppose the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). Wilkinson helped establish the CCPAF after losing his job with the City of Los Angeles Housing Authority because he refused to take a loyalty oath.
