Date:1949
Description:

Photograph of Charlotta Bass, second from left, at the dedication of the new Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company home office building, located at Adams Boulevard and Western Avenue. Leroy A. Beavers, left, was a superintendent of the company's home district. Norman O. Houston, center, was one of the company's founders and a member of its board of directors. The woman standing second from the right was the mother of Hale Woodruff, a prominent African-American artist and teacher. Hale Woodruff created a mural for the new insurance building, titled "The Negro in California History: Settlement and Development." The man on the right is historian Titus Alexander, who researched the history of African-Americans and the growth of an African-American population in the western United States. Founded in 1925, the Golden State Insurance Company was owned, operated and controlled by African-Americans. It initially was housed in a small building at 1435 Central Avenue, and moved to other locations as the company grew.
