Photograph of Charlotta Bass, center, browsing materials about African-Americans at the Hugh Gordon Book Shop. The woman second from the left is Adele Young, proprietor of the book store. She was the aunt of Carmen de Lavallade, an American actress, dancer and choreographer. An orator, writer and community activist, Gordon advocated self-determination for Africans and worked with the Los Angeles Men's Forum, a civil rights organization. Upon his death, Gordon left money in his will to open a bookstore specializing in materials about Africa and African-Americans. The Hugh Gordon Book Shop opened in the late 1940s, and during its existence was located at various places on or near Central Avenue, including 1109 E. 42nd Place, 4310 S. Central Ave., and 4507 S. Central Ave.
