Title:Employees and musicians join the picket line at Universal Die Casting, Jan. 29, 1948, Los Angeles
Date:1948 Jan. 29
Description:

Photograph of two musicians joining a picket line during a strike at Universal Die Casting. The company, located at 5001 S. Santa Fe Avenue in Los Angeles, was one of four struck by the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, Local 700 in January 1948. Musicians featured in the photo are Rich Dehr (wearing a hat), a member of Furniture Workers Local 576, and Eddie Mann of Peoples Songs. The picketers, members of Local 700, are, from left, Jess Knapp (holding a sign and partially hidden), Atheline Pearson, Eleanor Albino linking arms with Claude Morris, Rita Serna, and Gertrude Valdez (standing behind picket sign). Union members who worked at Universal and three other die casting plants demanded a seven-and-one-half-cent per hour wage hike and an additional paid holiday. After company officials failed to make an alternative salary offer, union members struck the four companies on Jan. 28, 1948. Company officials eventually agreed to the union's proposed salary hike and added Memorial Day to their list of paid holidays. Union members accepted the companies' offer on Feb. 2, ending the three-day strike.
