Title:Harvill Corporation advertises for help, Jan. 29, 1948, Los Angeles
Date:1948 Jan. 29
Description:

Photograph of a security guard keeping watch outside the Employment Office at Harvill Corporation, a die casting plant located at 6251 W. Century Boulevard in Los Angeles. Harvill hung the "Help Wanted" signs after members of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, Local 700 struck the plant in a wage and benefit dispute. Union members demanded a seven-and-one-half-cent per hour wage hike and an additional paid holiday. Employees struck Harvill on Jan. 29, 1948, after company officials failed to make an alternative salary offer. Company officials eventually agreed to the union's proposed salary hike and added Memorial Day to their list of paid holidays. Union members accepted the companies' offer on Feb. 2, ending the three-day strike.
