Title:Harvill Corporation plant during a labor strike, Jan. 29, 1948, Los Angeles
Date:1948 Jan. 29
Description:

Photograph of a building and parking lot at Harvill Corporation, a die casting company located at 6251 W. Century Boulevard in Los Angeles. Members of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, Local 700, struck the company on Jan. 28, 1948 in a dispute over wages and benefits. Harvill placed "Help Wanted" signs at its plant to seek replacements for the strikers. The company also urged members of other unions to dishonor the strike by placing a sign on its building with the following message: "Attention! Teamsters & Others. This strike was called by Mine, Mill & Smelter, the outfit that was kicked out of the C.I.O. It is an honor to cross this picket line." The strike lasted three days, and ended on Feb. 2, after Harvill agreed to the union's demand for a seven-and-one-half-cent per hour wage hike and the addition of Memorial Day as a paid holiday.
