Photograph of two unidentified men who went to the Hall of Justice to await the release of prisoners who were jailed for refusing to answer a grand jury's questions. Beginning in Oct. 1948, 21 individuals were cited for contempt and jailed for indefinite terms without bail for refusing to answer the grand jury's questions about the Communist Party of Los Angeles. The Civil Rights Congress and other civil libertarians organized protests and waged a legal battle to release the citizens on bail.
