Photograph of Rose Chernin receiving a warm greeting upon her release from a Los Angeles jail. Chermin and 14 other members of the Communist Party were indicted under the Smith Act, which made it a federal crime to advocate the overthrow of any United States government by force or violence. Chernin was arrested in August 1951; she and two other prisoners were released on Dec. 8, 1951.
