Photograph of Marguerite Robinson, executive director of the Los Angeles Civil Rights Congress (CRC), shaking hands with a member of the San Francisco CRC Citizens Jury. Emil Freed, organizing secretary of the CRC and founder of the Southern California Library for Social Studies and Research, stands next to Robinson. The photo was taken when the jury visited Los Angeles to view the "Smith Act trials." Enacted in 1940, the Smith Act made it a crime to knowingly or willfully advocate the overthrow of any government in the United States by force or violence. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, citizens in Los Angeles, New York and many other cities throughout the United States were arrested and tried for allegedly violating the Act.
