Title:Check for $1,000 payable to Civil Rights Congress, Nov. 3, 1949, Los Angeles
Date:1949 Nov. 3
Description:

Photograph of a woman's hand holding a check for $1,000 payable to the Civil Rights Congress. The check from the Phillips-Stone Company, at 8810 Beverly Boulevard in Hollywood, was a contribution to the Civil Rights Congress Bail Fund, a national campaign in support of the "New York 12." In 1948, 12 members of the Communist Party of the U.S.A. were indicted under the Smith Act, which made it illegal to advocate the overthrow of any U.S. government. Eleven of the 12 defendants were tried in 1949, found guilty and sentenced to prison. The Civil Rights Congress Bail Fund organized a national campaign to raise the money needed to release the defendants on bail.
