Official U.S. Navy photograph showing a group of naval aviation cadets during training at Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Whiting Field, Pensacola, Florida. The group includes two unidentified African-Americans. The back of the photograph contains the following caption: "NAVAL AVIATION CADETS LEROY YOUNG (left) AND MAX PRITCHETT, JR., (right), discuss the day's flight operations with fellow students and instructor Lieutenant L.M. Ellefson, USN, at Basic Training Unit--One, Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Whiting Field, Florida. BTU-1 is the beginning of 29 weeks of flight training in the Basic Training Command. It is climaxed by the students flying from home base to an aircraft carrier at sea where they land and take off six times to successfully complete carrier qualification and go on to Advanced Training at Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas."
