Photograph of James A. Vena, a Los Angeles resident. The back of the photograph contains the handwritten message "James A. Vena, father of Dorothy Vena Johnson." Dorothy Vena Johnson was a teacher in the Los Angeles Public Schools. During the 1940s, she was president of the Allied Arts League, an organization that sponsored art exhibitions, plays and concerts to promote the work of African-American artists. Dorothy Vena also was a poet whose verse was published in anthologies.
