Title:Letter, March 26 A.D. 1965, Memphis, Tenn. to Warren
Date:1965 Mar. 26
Description:

Letter from March 26, 1965 written by Arnold Blain of Memphis, Tennessee, describing his experience with John Wesley during their participation in the conclusion of the Selma-Montgomery Rights March in Montgomery, Alabama. The letter describes their drive from Memphis to Montgomery, joining the march participants in the city including a group of American historians, waiting at the Capitol building for the rest of the marchers, and the demonstration. It also mentions the security at the demonstration provided by the Alabama National Guard, and the guardsmens' disapproval of their role protecting the demonstrators. The file also contains a handwritten note by Selma Lewis to Jim Johnson at the Memphis Public Library dated January 1, 1989, when a copy of the letter was donated to the library. Lewis provides further information on Arnold Blain and John Wesley. The Selma-Montgomery Rights March began in Selma, Alabama, on March 21, 1965 after two earlier attempts to demonstrate for voting rights and against violence against civil rights workers. The demonstration made it the 54 miles to Montgomery on March 26.

The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
