This photograph shows John Lewis speaking at a meeting of the American Society of Newspaper Editors in 1964. Lewis was elected chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1963 and served until 1966. The philosophy and tactics of SNCC underwent a radical shift following Lewis's departure.
