|Title:||Phillip Lapsanski [sic]|
Records collected by the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission on Phillip Lapsansky. The folder is titled "Lapsanski" although the name is correctly spelled "Lapsaksy." According to the records, Lapsansky was a member of the Socialist Workers Party in Seattle and the chair of the Young Socialist Alliance there before coming to Mississippi as part of Freedom Summer in 1964. He stayed in Mississippi for the next two years working for the Council of Federated Organizations, the National Council of Churches, and the Freedom Democratic Party before leaving the state in 1966. In 1965 he was arrested during a protest march, although usually he was the record keeper and took photographs and made recordings of meetings and events. The folder contains a letter to the editor of the Jackson Daily News written by Lapsansky, reports on him and his work, articles from the newspaper and the Congressional Record, and a photograph of him.
The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
