Case materials from the trial seeking Lloyd Gaines' admittance to the University of Missouri School of Law. The Web site links to files from Boone County Court, the Missouri Supreme Court, and the United States Supreme Court. The decisions from the Missouri Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court illustrate the shift in direction regarding civil rights taking place in America during this turbulent time. The Missouri Supreme Court decision is a clear reflection of the Missouri Constitution and statutes regarding the education of African-Americans in Missouri. The United States Supreme Court understandably represents a broader viewpoint, encompassing all that was happening nationwide. Although the doctrine of "separate but equal" had not yet been overturned in the Supreme Court, the Gaines decision paved the way for Brown v. Board of Education's decisive repudiation of Plessy v. Ferguson sixteen years later.
The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
