This picture was taken of "The Goatman" and Family the second year of their travels in Wellman, Iowa, year of 1937." Before becoming the wandering Goat Man, McCartney worked for the WPA cutting timber until he suffered an accident that crippled his left arm. Stetson Kennedy (1916-2011), writer and civil rights activist, collected these photographs during the course of his career fighting for equality throughout the Southern United States.
