This site provides a variety of resources to assist teachers and students in the study of history. The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History has pioneered new models of history schools and programs; it offers professional development opportunities for educators, provides documents and exercises for classroom use, and encourages excellence in student writing with essay prizes. Online resources include: American History Quizzes, Battle Lines: Letters from America's Wars, Featured Documents for Your Classroom, Historians' Podcasts, History Teacher of the Year Information, Major Topics in American History, Primary Source Documents from the Collection, and Traveling Exhibitions for Schools and Libraries. The modules on Major Topics in American History consist of teaching and learning resources on more than 20 American history subjects. Links from the home page lead to summer seminars for teachers and then to seminar documents projects which are "classroom materials developed by Gilder Lehrman Institute Summer Seminar participants. These selected "document projects" are intended for integration into classroom lesson plans and feature selections from a variety of primary source documents such as letters, diary entries, cartoons, paintings, songs, and statutes, followed by a series of thought-provoking questions designed to elicit sustained student responses as well as examine student comprehension of the text." The document projects for the section on The Civil Rights Movement include the following: Robert Kennedy's Speech on Martin Luther King's Death; The Promise of Democracy: JFK's Radio and Television Report to the American People on Civil Rights, June 11, 1963; First Day of Integration at Central High School, Little Rock, Arkansas; Lyndon Johnson's Commencement Address at Howard University; and U.N. Declaration of Human Rights Evaluating Lyndon B. Johnson's Character and Efforts During the Civil Rights Era.
The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
