|Title:||Powerful days in black and white|
This Web site presents twenty black-and-white photographs covering the civil rights movement in the American South taken by Charles Moore during the years 1958-1965; it also includes a brief biography of Moore. Moore began as a photographer for the newspaper the Montgomery Advertiser before working as a contract photographer for Life Magazine. Events covered include the early efforts of Dr. King to desegregate Montgomery, Alabama (1958-60); the violent reaction to the enrollment of James Meredith as the first black student at the University of Mississippi (1962); the Freedom March from Tennessee to Mississippi (1963); the campaign to desegregate Birmingham, Alabama (1963); voter registration drives in Mississippi (1963-1964); Ku Klux Klan activities in North Carolina (1965); and the march from Montgomery to Selma, Alabama (1965). The site's photographs are a selection from a book of Moore's civil rights photographs, Powerful Days, The Civil Rights Photography of Charles Moore (New York: Stewart, Tabori & Chang, 1991).
The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
