Web site presenting mug shots of civil rights workers arrested in Montgomery, Alabama on February 21, 1956 and on May 25, 1961. The black-and-white photographs were discovered in 2004 in the basement of the Montgomery County Sheriff's office. The Web site also provides examples of book pages for the African American men arrest book and the African American women arrest book as well as a page from the handwritten arrest ledger. On February 21, 1956, over one hundred African Americans were arrested for participating in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and charged with violating a state anti-boycotting law passed in 1921. On May 25, 1961, eleven men, four white professors from Connecticut Universities, three African American college students, and four Alabama civil rights leaders, were arrested as part of the 1961 Freedom Rides when they tried to integrate the lunch counter at the Montgomery bus counter.
The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
