|Title:||Get up stand up : the story of pop and protest|
Web site companion to a six-part series documenting the history of the interaction between popular music and political causes and charity work. The series outlines the history of the interaction, the commitment of individual artists, major trends and movements of the last fifty years, and the history of political engagement in music. The site documents five songs: The Preacher and the Slave; We Shall Overcome; Give Peace a Chance; Get Up, Stand Up; and Fight the Power. For each song, an essay explains the song's development and significance and a video clip plays segments of the song and musicians' comments. It explores nine events in which music played a significant role including the Great Depression; the United States labor movement; the Civil Rights movement; the Vietnam War; the birth of Bangledesh; apartheid; Central American Wars; Ethiopian famine; and the war in Iraq. For each event, the user may listen to selections of significant music while reading about the event. The site also lists other related resources.
The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
